i'm in TORONTO!!!!! well, i live in toronto, so i guess it doesn't warrant so many exclamation marks. i came home on friday night on the greyhound, taking up two seats because i didn't want to share or sit beside someone (this can be achieved by giving all passers-by the EVIL eye, or more simply, when someone asks you whether they can sit in the seat next to you, just say no) because i really wanted to stretch out and take off my suffocating knee-high hooker boots, and air out my stinky toes and give my toe jam a chance to see sunlight. and that i did! aaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahhhahahahhaha!!!!! i didn't bring home any luggage except a change of clothing for this award dinner i had to go to, and the smallest textbook i own, temporomandibular joint disorder management. the textbook remains untouched and unopened, and instead, on my way home, i stopped by chapters and bought this other book, the adventures of kavalier and clay (a pulitzer prize winner - i suggest you read it!). i also stopped by benetton because i'm absolutely in love with dresses and always was and really you can't get a better deal than pants and a top all rolled up into one little dress for one fantastic price...no stupid-assed matching of skirt and top, no annoying-assed spending time to see which shirts go with which pants, tucked or untucked, zipped or (heh heh heh wink wink nudge nudge) unzipped...anyway, i saw this absolutely cutiepoo dress made of linen, but when i tried it on it was absolutely see-thru - which really, i don't have a problem with but it's far far too early in my life to shame my family and reveal my thunder thighs - and since i didn't buy a see-thru dress, and everything else i own is opaque, i decided it would be a good idea to stop by rol san to get some crispy beef to really develop those thunder thighs....
CRISPY BEEF!!!!! WHAT I WOULD DO FOR THIS DISH!!!!! i would touch my own eyeball. you can get it at rol san, on spadina, and it's a chef's special, for like a little less than 10 bucks. it's in a honey spicy orange ginger sauce, and really, it's what one should eat just before one approaches the pearly gates (or alternatively, if you wish you approach the pearly gates well before your time, this deep-fried well-oiled red meat dish should promptly accomplish that). i can't even describe the taste of this thing - i can't ever quite remember how it tastes, even though i've had it numerous times, eschewing paid-for-food-by-dad in the dining hall at Trinity to skip down spadina, ten bucks in my pocket, with my crispy beef partner-in-crime, jisun. it has been a post-clubbing 3 am staple for a long time now, and post-U of T, it's the thing to do when us trinity people are ever in town at the same time. you know, it tastes like oil. but yummy oil. oil incensed with ginger and honey and spicy and orange...it's the kind of food you know is not really that healthy, but you eat one piece, and you go yum! and you eat another. then you think to yourself i really shouldn't eat anymore. but you eat another anyway because heck, you've already eaten two. and then you eat another, because you vow that you'll work out more this week. but then you eat another because you think geez how fat can someone get eating this anyway? who cares? who's going to notice another chin fold when you've get 2 or 3 already? then you just eat with abandon because life is just so unfair and so hard and you DESERVE that crispy beef!
anyway, today i went to this awards dinner for some scholarship thing - and although the thought of a scholarship would have excited me maybe four years ago, i really didn't want to attend this function (korean functions are long and drawn out and gradually the people get drunker and drunker and redder and redder and then some fool pulls out the kareoke machine and then all these middle-aged ajummas start warbling folk songs...it's not a pretty sight) - and contemplated just asking for the money to be mailed to me...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahhahahahhhhahah!!!!! when i got there, an old friend from high school, ellen lee, was there and we screamed and squealed in the bathroom of the westin prince, because girls do girly things like that and we hadn't seen each other for more than four years. anyway, we were talking about the acceptance speeches we were requested to make, and compared them. mine: hello, thank you, bye (in korean). hers: thank you for the money. actually, i made a decent speech and even worked the crowd - said respectful things to the right people, made general comments about the wonderfulness of edumacation, and even made a joke utilizing the korean language... ah, our generation, we're such an ungrateful bunch of ingrates. anyway, all through dinner (unremarkable hunks of meat and like a teaspoon of scalloped potatoes - I WANTED MORE!!!! - and steamed turnips - WHO WANTS TO EAT STEAMED TURNIPS THAT TASTE LIKE CRAP????? - but dessert - a creamy tiramisu with good, stiff consistency in a raspberry coulis with shaved white chocolate and cherries dotting the interior of the tiramisu like a little surprise here and there) and all through everything and all through the auction (a flat LCD screen! airline tickets to the sweet motherland ROK!) all i could do was consider the young-and-upwardly-mobile korean guys sitting in the ballroom, and wonder what it would be like to marry all of them...whoops. what i meant was, wonder what it would be like to establish long-lasting, philosophically-based friendships yielding a lifetime of bountiful conversation and insight and wisdom making way for ground-breaking modes of aristotelian thought and meta-analysis.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahhaha WHATEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i meant the former. AAAAAAHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHHHHHaahahahah!!
