mmmm....food. other things get boring so fast, but good food can always take you to higher and higher planes of gastronomical delight each time. which is why my three weeks of freedom from research started off so well when we had our "au revoir, serena!" party at sassafraz last saturday night.
sometimes when certain places hold memories for me, i don't like to return. it's more of an ego thing, a bad karma thing, or on the other hand, it's more of a "let's preserve the dear dear memory by never disturbing the place again" kind of a thing...and in this case, it's the latter, even though sassafraz is quite a beautiful restaurant, smack dab in the middle of yorkville, and frequented by celebrities, such as ben affleck. it's got a californian warmth inside - whites and green apples and birch inside - and a californian modernity (a waiter - male, who wore make-up in colors such as lavender and iridescent pinks and lipstick, even). anyway, i came here for the Saints Ball dinner during my first year at trinity - a large group of us did - and it was for this event that i asked, romeo and juliet style, my first university crush to be my date.
so with that in the back of my mind, i came back to sassafraz after a four year hiatus. ah....eating should always be so enjoyable. middle-aged men with respectable silver-ing of hair walked in with their loose linen shirts rolled up at the sleeves, subtlely reeking of money, the hostesses were hostesses (models, actually), the waiters beautiful (dressed all in black, understated silver belt buckles - they knew what to do too...after we had dug into our morroccan platter - we dug into it so enthusiastically that there was tabouleh all over the table. so the waiter guy came by with like a silver scraper thing, and scraped the entire thing off the linen - after which we started giggling because it was worse - there were green streaks all over the table, but then he came back and placed a square of linen over it, and said "shh...we'll pretend like it never happened" which was even funnier...). woozy after one sip of our white sangria, i stuffed all this food into myself - i'm actually too impatient to describe it right now. i gonna go figure out what to do with my free free free time!
