i didn't realize how little time there is left until the start of yet another academic year. how many academic (post-secondary) years have i had...hmmm...a good 6 or so. i wonder if that makes me more desirable, in terms of marriage. (look of disgust). hahahah! that's been on my mind lately cause a friend of mine returned from a year in provence (just kidding. a year in paris. i just wanted to use the triplet"year in provence". sounds so french, non?) with such a practicality with respect to marriage that i'm starting to think the same way as well. marriage is simply a contract, and you musn't expect to enter it like....fraulein maria, unknowingly heading toward a life of austrian music and dancing and presents on the balcony and cotillions and parties with a wealthy captain von trapp. you will not be "baby" and meet your lover, who is a dancing bad boy, at a summer resort and practice lifts with him (while unknowingly falling in love) in a lake. you will not be ally mcbeal to her larry, who is, my idea of someone so heart-wrenchingly perfect. deadpan, yet funny. perfect one-liners to make your heart melt. witty, sarcastic, yet sensitive. no, no, my friend! how wrong are you! man...the people you see on television, in the magazines, in the movies. those characters are just one big conglomeration of everything you'd ever wanted in a significant other, and these reels prey on you, yes they do, with these archetypal dreamboats that simply do not exist, or cannot possibly be embodied in a single person, except in emulation. think of it: if everyone did have, and did exude this archetypal idea of "the perfect man/woman", then you would be absolutely happy to marry anyone, and we know this is not the case. in addition, man, would you ever need endless resources to make it all happen. it's all about creating circumstance, and seducing the other into a state of suspending their disbelief. and that requires money. case in point: larry, ally mcbeal's love interest, says goodbye to ally by building her a giant snowman, and then outfits it in burberry. magically, when ally finds it, on her new york sidewalk, the burberry is still on the snowman. no one has removed the snowman's blaze with recognizable tartan. ally, so much in love with larry, decides to preserve this snowman until he comes back, and - get this - she buys an upright freezer to store this larry-snowman through the months. nevermind the logistics of transferring a snowman from a sidewalk into a freezer in an apartment. argh! they just put these wildly romantic notions into your head!
do i digress? i do a lot.
anyway, reality, practicality...i think i can accept that avenue, more readily than before, with respect to love. no one will have to punch the right floor number when we get into separate elevators - nothing unrealistic like that.
just make me a mix tape. ;p
argh. anyway, back to the top. it's the last week of summer break before back to school...frantically seeing friends before the grind makes us all into beef, putting in a new floor floor for the kitchen (i'm doing backbreaking work!)...i'm reading a book i swore i would never read (devil wears prada).
